Reflections on the Passing of a Damn Good Dawg

Category: Breaking,Daily News,SportsBig Dawg @ 9:35 pm

Today University of Georgia mascot Uga VII suffered a heart attack and passed away.  Coverage from the AJC, ABH, R&B, UGA Athletic Association, Georgia Sports Blog, David Hale’s Bulldogs Blog, Scout.com, and FanNation.  Uga’s death was even covered on CNN (that’s how important this bulldog was).  The words of Sonny Seiler, Uga owner:

“He was 10-3 last year which is not bad for a ‘freshman,’” said Seiler. “Uga VII was not as active or mischievous as his father but more distinguished. He realized his role when he put his shirt on. He was well-behaved and always appreciated the significance of his role.”

The Seilers have said that there will be no live mascot for this weekend’s UGA-Kentucky game in Athens (AJC).  But, the Seilers are saying that an interim bulldog will grace the field for Georgia’s rivalry game against Georgia Tech in Atlanta on November 28, and likely for a bowl game.

We would also like to post some links to people who posted good stories and remembrances of Uga VII.  Mark Bradley of the AJC posts his own story of getting to know the Ugas.  He also notes a great quote from then-Coach Vince Dooley, who said in response to Otto filling-in for the injured Uga IV in 1986, “We’ve got good depth at dog.”

Georgia Sports Blog discusses Uga VII, and DawgSports has two great posts (here and here).  DawgSports also the rumor going around and their response:

There’s been some call for a blackout in honor of Uga VII. No offense to anyone championing that idea, but I think the proper tribute would be to sweep Kentucky and Georgia Tech, wearing the silver britches and red helmets that God intended.

Let us all remember that Uga VII’s last game was a great victory, and he goes out as a winner.

Good Damn Dawg, Uga VII.
